New solutions for the treatment of chronic pain

Chronic pain is a debilitating condition that undermines quality of life.

Chronic pain is strongly associated with increased personal suffering, poor health, depression, reduced productivity and social isolation.

According to Pain Australia, one in four Australians suffer from chronic pain. David Butler, co author of " Explain Pain" calls it the "silent epidemic".

Over the past decade, advances in scientific research of the brain and central nervous system has demonstrated that chronic pain is a medical condition which arises from the dysregulation of the healing process and sensitisation of the pain system.

This will be a relief to those who have been told the cause of their persistent pain is purely psychological.

When chronic pain gets worse if it is treated as if it is the same pain as acute pain (which resolves naturally as part of the healing process).

The old saying ”NO pain, NO gain” is also counterproductive. David Butler advocates a “KnoW pain, KnoW gain”approach.  Knowing how to regulate your nervous system and by applying some common sense self management strategies can help your hypersensitive nervous system settle down and restore the body's natural regulating and healing systems so you can safely increase your activity levels safely, without increasing your pain.

Our courses provide principles, information and skills that foster:

a. Recovery: principles, stages, mindset, healing, roadblocks

b. Self-regulation: emotions, stress, pain, activity

c. Self-management: injury management skills (posture, pacing & protection) adjustment, self care, relapse management.

d. Social support: Guidelines for communicating productively with family, friends, employer, medical providers and your insurance company.

The information and skills you'll need are organised into a Pain Recovery Blueprint; a step by step guide so you will know what to expect and what to do to move through the 4 stages of the recovery and rehabilitation process (Repair, Rehabilitation, Restoration, Maintenance) with confidence.

Comprehensive initial and review assessments are undertaken to ensure you can adapt this program to your circumstances,as well as to monitor your progress and make recommendations for additional support if required.

Our goal is to help get you back to functioning normally, so you can get on with your life, without fear of pain or re-injury.

Life skills modules

To be successful in any area of our life we need effective life skills and coping strategies.

  •  Sometimes you may lack the experience to know how to handle a challenging situation.
  • Sometimes the way you handle a situation doesn't result in outcomes you hoped for.
  • Sometimes you may find your life skills were working fine until a particular situation arises in your life and the very same strategies, either don't work or seem to work against you.

When a person lacks effective life skills, it's easy to get stuck, lost or feel helpless.  If you don't know what else to do and you keep repeating the same strategies which don't work ,it will begin to feel like you're 'banging your head against a brick wall.'  Chronic anxiety or sense of helplessness and hopeless are associated with the development of depression.

If you have distressing or frustrating recurring patterns in your life, it could be you need a new life skill.

Leading Edge Psychology offers a range of short Life Skill modules designed to increase self mastery and relationship skills. Each module provides you with simple models, techniques and strategies to improve your self confidence, self esteem or effectiveness with other people.
